"King"
Y15 Bay Thoroughbred Colt 16 HH Earnings: $342,000 Lifetime HoTY Points: |
Despite his mother's high-strung attitude and the competitiveness of both parents, King is very much the quiet successor to the throne. He has a kind soul, and lacks much of the outward aggressiveness of many of his gender. He isn't bothered by much in particular, and tends to be the first horse to get used to a new place or situation. However, he also reacts the most violently to something new or scary - loud noises tend to set him off the most, and he'll practically jump out of his skin if it isn't something he recognizes. However, he probably won't spook at it a second time. Growing up at Valkyrie, there isn't much left there that can startle him, and he's the relaxed sort of horse that you hardly even need a lead rope on to groom or blanket. He's the relaxed and confident leader whenever something such as showing is going on, and tend to be the horse in the field that the other colts crowd near when something upsetting is going on. As steadfast as he is, King doesn't seem to like tracks on race day at all. There are always new sounds to get him worked up and upset, and he altogether becomes a different horse than the one everyone is used to seeing. After a couple of trips to the track for schooling, Cole decided to try and waylay some of his discomfort. They put cotton in his ears, and though he's still not totally comfortable and relaxed, he's not any more anxious than any other horse in the big crowds. With the cotton, he can truly focus without being bothered by the chaos around him and just enjoy the competition.

Grade 3: 21-7-3-9
Prospect Race Record: 4-1-2-0 Surface, Distance: Dual, 5-8 Furlongs Leg Type: Front Runner/Preceder Jockey: Lillian Howe Without distractions, King is quiet going into the gate and focused on his task. He can be a step slow leaving the gate, given that he can't hear the bells quite as well as the others. However, he's never far behind, and is quite comfortable settling behind the leaders or in fact leading the field if others drop back. He's not overeager or rank, and goes along quite nicely despite the high pace of a sprint. He doesn't get overeager, so it's up to his rider to get him rolling when it's time. And roll he does. He's a monster roaring down the track, overtaking and engulfing those before him, and he does it with glee.
