"Leah"
Y13 Grey (Bay) Thoroughbred Mare 16.2 HH Lifetime HoTY Points: |
Leah has a fiery attitude and a rather short temper when it comes down to it. Being led from her stall always involves a firm grip and a very determined groom. She has a jerky stride, mostly because she is almost always being held back and restrained in some way. She has a tendency to rush into situations unprepared and often comes out of them with a few bumps and bruises. Though not the top-dog in the pasture, Leah can take care of herself and will often put others in their place when they try to bully her.
Her patience is getting better with training but every now and then she will get an itch to fight with her handlers. A couple times it has resulted in broken cross ties or halters and involves a large group to try and corner the mare and catch her. Once Leah opens up on the track however, she floats and runs with a flawless stride. Her dam's spookiness does show up if there are any loud bangs that occur within close proximity. She generally will bolt before looking at the source, which makes her extremely dangerous on the cross ties and while being led. The grey mare knows when someone inexperienced mounts up and will not hesitate to toss them on the ground as soon as they hit her back. Winter time is her least favorite season as she hates anything wet and cold, aka snow. And she holds a deathly grudge against clippers, to her owner's dismay. |
Grade 4: 22-5-7-9
Surface/Distance: Dirt, 8-11 Furlongs Leg Type: Closer Jockey: Lillian Howe Leah's running style is a little bit of a surprise compared to her hot-headedness. It may be thanks to her spook at sudden, loud sounds, but she breaks very quickly from the gate. Then the tables turn and the grey mare relaxes until the leaders catch her and she has the chance to settle just behind them. From there she pushes the front runners at a fast pace for most of the distance. Her jockey has very little control when they start closing in on the wire and she will take control of her own pace. Leah can spot an opening from a mile away and will shoot for the front when she sees an opportunity.
